As part of Scottish Food Guide’s planned move out of town, Wendy’s city base is now on the market. A rare opportunity to purchase a piece of Edinburgh history. Designed by George Washington Browne for the Scottish artist Charles Martin Hardie, this imaginative dwelling is mentioned in many architectural volumes. GWB designed The Central Library, The Caledonian Hotel and other prestigious buildings plus a few private commissions. The eastern wing of Drumsheugh Toll is cleverly converted from artist’s studio to 3 bed 2 public room apartment. It boasts an enviable central location on a tranquil street – a rare treat in the capital – with what many have called one of the best views in the city over Dean Valley. Quintessential style - the cool place to be! With inspired menus The Bonham is the perfect haven in Edinburgh's bustling West End. Moments away from Princes Street the dining room overlooks the stately peaceful crescent of Drumsheugh and also over Dean Village and its historic buildings. It masters the skills of being a hotel with a beautiful restaurant and the ambience of a stylish residence. There is also a lovely lounge bar called the Consulting Rooms, a nod to its former use. One magazine has dubbed it "One of the Coolest Hotels of the Twenty First Century." They very kindly allowed me to bring along some students to see behind the scenes and they were blown away! The Bonham also offer lighter meals and afternoon teas.

A unique partnership has transformed one of the Royal Mile’s most historic buildings into a food and drink experience unlike anything else in Scotland. Sixteenth century Cannonball House has undergone an ambitious renovation to create a landmark restaurant, gelateria, and caffe spread over three floors with spectacular views of the Castle and the city of Edinburgh. The project has been undertaken by Victor and Carina Contini who already own Contini Ristorante on George Street and The Scottish Cafe & Restaurant at the Scottish National Gallery on The Mound. With a porridge bar, artisan gelateria and Italian street food café, the newly opened Contini Caffe celebrates the couple’s Italian heritage with a food offering to match. Doesn't it look amazing?

Beautifully prepared Italian dishes made with the freshest ingredients from the Milan markets and their East Lothian garden, Victor & Carina's vibrant venue serves delicious lights as well as more substantial dishes - open 8 till late. A touch of Italy in Scotland's capital. Formerly called Centotre I have had wonderful meals here as well as irresistible additions when I pop in for a latte...such as this limoncello dessert pictured! This beautiful café has terrific views over the Forth and is a pleasant short drive from the city centre on the road to the bridge near South Queensferry. They serve hot dish of the day, light dishes, salads, terrines, soups and home baking. Great supporters of local and home grown produce and a super place to eat. 2009 Winners of the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Food, the Sinclair family have been local food heroes for many years with their lovely jams and chutneys from their West Craigie Jam Kitchen and their wonderful farm soft fruits available in punnets from the shop or pick-your-own. Alongside their cafe they also have a great deli with many locally sourced meats, fish and cheeses and provisions such as Brodies teas and coffees. Well worth a visit... again and again.

A staunch supporter of Scottish produce, James' reputation for excellent food makes this a popular haunt. Charming place, modest size so best to book. The meals are delicious and always with seasonal produce. The black pot (prais dubh) of the logo sits snugly in the corner. James and Heather created this charming restaurant in the heart of the old town 24 years ago, and ever since it is sought out by locals, tourists and great names alike. Raymond Blanc has dined here several times – indeed once was turned away when there were no free tables! Great place; lovely atmosphere. Scotland's original for top veggie dining. 50 years young in 2013 and still owned by the Henderson family, now in its 3rd generation. Look out for their cookbooks full of healthy eating tips. Counter service by day and table service in evenings. The Henderson family has also an art gallery dedicated to the founder Janet Henderson. Janet was an absolute trail blazer, creating innovative salads in the early 60's in Edinburgh and generations have dated and dined here. It has live music and local produce, often cooked with an international twist reflecting the cosmopolitan chefs over the years. As much as possible is sourced organically. A real treat.

Henderson's @ St John's is in the former Cornerstone Cafe beneath St John's Church at the corner of Princes Street and Lothian Road at Edinburgh's West End. St John's is one of Edinburgh's most recognisable landmarks. It was designed by the architect William Burn, whose other buildings include Inverness Castle, John Watson's Hospital - now the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The historic barrel-vaulted bistro can seat up to 80 people and offers the very best in contemporary vegetarian cookery at great value prices. It is a snug atmospheric place to go in winter and has al fresco seating all summer in addition to the lovely views from the windows, views of Edinburgh Castle that were secured by an Act of Parliament forbidding any further building on the south side of the church. From coffee and cakes to lovely main courses, salads and desserts, all home made and mainly organic, accompanied by their delicious breads, this is a great place to go any time and available to be booked for events too.

This bistro has the delightful tagline 'French Twist Using The Best of Scotland' and it truly does. These delightful bistros are totally French in style yet proud of their use of Scottish produce. Meats are often slow cooked for full flavour; fish and shellfish are skilfully cooked with a lightness of touch. 'The Auld Alliance is alive here and Fred & Betty have their own version of "entente-cordiale". Fred seeks out others that share his passion for excellence.' On the evening we dined we had steaming pots of moules mariniere, excellent vegetarian woodland mushroom vol au vents and an individual pot au feu brimming with braised lamb and roots slow cooked in their juices. With French posters and signs, bistro tables and delightful French staff we could have been in Paris! ALSO...L'ESCARGOT BLEU @ 56 Broughton Street on 0131 557 1600

The Café and upstairs Oyster Bar are unique Edinburgh classics. Almost 200 years old the name reflects the oysters that were so commonplace around Edinburgh in the 1820's - indeed so common the poor were fed up eating them! This opulent baroque Parisian building is hidden behind Princes Street at Edinburgh's East End but only a moment away from the thoroughfare so well worth seeking it out. Go for a gastronomic experience or simply a light meal. The menus are a celebration of the best Scottish classics and produce, particularly but not exclusively seafood. You can even pop in for a coffee or dram. Watch out for the ghost - there is a resident one!!

On the first floor of the Rutland Hotel at Edinburgh's West End is Kyloe (an old Scots word for highland cattle). This is a quintessential gourmet steak restaurant although if steak is not your bag do not fear. With rich leathers and cattle decor, meat is definitely de rigour and the well designed menu also gives informative notes on the breeds and cuts. Highly respected David Haetzman is Executive Chef here and was also kind enough to present an excellent show in our Cookery Theatre at the Royal Highland this year, 2014. ...and while you are there, The Edinburgh Gin Distillery and Visitor Centre is in the hotel basement - well worth a visit!

Although predominantly seafood there are gourmet steaks here too. The dishes are international in style but most definitely Scottish in produce. On the night we dined we had crab, cured salmon, Orkney rib and a wonderful pavlova for dessert. Sublime. This is definitely a place to remember. Named after the famous Scottish peak this venue has just had a complete facelift at entrance level creating a vibrant contemporary Scottish Gin and Wine Bar with Bistro for lighter meals, buzzing lunches and post work chill times (pictured). The menu comprises sharing platters, creamy seafood soups and showcases gourmet producers. Quirky and appealing, Stac Polly has been on the go for quite a while and is as popular as ever. Consistently rated highly for their authentic celtic style menus in the atmospheric lower ground restaurant this is a popular place with a difference. There is a second venue in St Mary's Street.

Well-known Edinburgh restaurateur David Ramsden, who brought us (fitz)Henry and Rogue has brought us The Dogs – a great concept of value for money, delightful informality, and above all, great food - ethical, sustainable and great tasting! David champions Scottish and British ingredients and I for one shall certainly be back! Interestingly for locals of a certain age (!) The Dogs is in the venue formerly occupied by the Edinburgh Wine Bar. And as for the name? Well from the quirky artwork to the humorous designs and the beautiful photography I assume David loves his canine companion.

This delightful and diminutive listed Playfair building was indeed the gardener's cottage and is now a quirky restaurant owned and run by two gifted young chefs, passionate about local produce and unflinching in their standards to use seasonal ingredients in all their dishes. Their methods are innovative and you will love it! I dined here recently with the students from the University of Gastronomic Sciences, Pollenzo, and Slow Food members - we all had a great time. No great string of dishes on the menu here - concise menus with top produce - a winning combination.

Andrew, along with wife Lisa and their children Ben, Jo and Abi have opened their exciting new venture, The Timberyard, at Edinburgh’s West End. The building’s history is fascinating and when last open it was the timberyard on Lady Lawson Street. I remember it well as my Dad is very skilled with woodwork and we were often to be found there on Saturday mornings selecting lengths for his latest ploy. I remember the scents of cedar, pine and linseed… and now you can enjoy wonderful ethical dishes from Ben's kitchen. Reflecting elements of Nordic inspiration in their decor and use of ingredients, we savoured his Wild Mallard and Soused Mackerel (pictured) for our starters, followed by Tongue with Horseradish Mash and Newtonmore Venison Hot Pot. The Radfords have transformed this warehouse into an inspiring food destination.

This delightful bistro has won many plaudits from the East Lothian Food Awards and is a massive supporter of local producers of which East Lothian is well placed. Although primarily seafood (chef proprietor earned his spurs with Rick Stein) there are other tasty menu options to savour and a Member of Scotch Beef Club. This delightful herb garden and cafe is on the old site of Damhead near Hillend ski slope on the way to IKEA. It is an idyllic spot, beautifully and harmoniously presented with charming outside spots to dine as well as a few tables inside the main building and the largest greenhouse. There are all sorts of things to catch your eye - from vintage gardening tools to good books, home grown produce and interesting garden themed gifts. The home baking is delicious and over lunchtime they also have a quiche of the day with herb salad served in an eco box. Fun, fabulous and friendly!

This hostelry has a long history of providing sustenance and warmth to the weary traveller over the generations and since 2010 has come into its own with new owners creating a great venue worthy of destination dining. It is light and contemporary yet still has the character you would wish. The staff are friendly and enthusiastic and the menu is not only well set out and balanced but also filled with interesting notes on provenance such as the pork is from their own Saddleback pigs grazing on the slopes opposite - and great pork it was too! They have a walled garden and stress the importance of produce throughout the menu. They justly received Catering in Scotland's Pub Excellence Award in 2012. Right on the bridge by the canal it also has two barges available for hire for cruise dining.

'Steak' out in style at this renowned eatery. They have a fine menu of prime produce and have particularly made their name showcasing Scotch Beef and seafood. The proprietors took a collection of buildings - some dating back to the sixteenth century - and transformed them over the years into this award-winning restaurant with rooms. We tend to think of Champany for languid evenings of serious dining however they also do a 'quick supper' menu - equally delicious but a different option. Nearby is their more informal Chop & Ale House too.

Make the effort to find this pretty venue tucked away down a vennel. The Livingston family opened in 1994 and continue to be destination dining. Its popularity is testament to their success and their wonderful seasonal menus are a joy to the palate, such as this beautiful lamb I chose. They serve contemporary food with character, at elegant tables with views over their beautiful gardens.
