Lesley and Colin have a truly special place here and have deservedly received a Michelin Star. They use neighbouring Highland Stoneware pottery to set the stage for their highly creative dishes and grow many of their vegetables themselves. It is amazing what you can grow so far north when you are skilful and dedicated. Their passion for sourcing the best is well known far from these shores and this star shines as brightly as ever. If you haven’t visited for a while it is surely time to return – but be sure to book! They are Members of the prestigious Scotch Beef Club and together Lesley and Colin have created sublime meals for over 20 years at The Albannach and it always a pleasure to return to this truly special place.

Congratulations to Ballathie for winning Best CHEESEBOARD in Scotland and the UK Award at the British Cheese Awards. (October 2013). Ballathie’s General Manager says: “It’s the latest example of the great culinary strides we’re achieving at Ballathie to make it a major dining destination. Cheese is part of Britain’s food heritage and an important part of a meal.” I couldnt agree more! Turreted fairytale architecture with fine food and wonderful relaxing ambience is signature to this gracious hideaway by Perth. Guests at Ballathie are usually lucky enough to see some of the many red squirrels that live here on the estate. With its glorious riverside location a stay here is pure magic. CHEESEMAKER - A relatively new cheesemaker and already winning awards. Barwheys is a hard Ayrshire cheese from the unpasteurised milk of their pedigree Ayrshire cattle. The handmade cheeses are bandaged in traditional cotton cheesecloth, and carefully aged on wooden shelves for between 9 and 12 months. Some are smoked and there is also a new arrival on the scene, in limited supply, the Barwheys Beastie - a mature wonderfully complex cheese destined for Burns Suppers. No onsite retail - stockists include George Mews Cheese Shop on Byres Road and many more listed on their weblink.

CHEESEMAKER - This handmade cheese from Royal Deeside was a family favourite in the 70's when Barbara Reid made it for home consumption on the farm. They now produce a delicious range of raw milk cheeses made the traditional way including one called Lairig Grhu, a crumbly tangy cheese named after the famous mountain pass... all their cheeses have distinctive aromatic flavours to appreciate. You will find their cheeses at local farmer's markets.

ICE CREAM & CHEESEMAKER - Cream O Galloway is so much more than ice cream - although that is award-wininng too! Their green credentials are superb, their visitor centre perfect for families and in addition to enjoying their delightfully creamy ice cream in a great range of flavours you can also enjoy a burger in their cafe - home made from their own organic slow growing beef cattle - so nothing but the best here! Their dairy methods are highly ethical and their sustainability record has won them several awards. Their latest addition to the range is their chocolate chip honeycomb ice cream. The rich, creamy milk on Rainton Farm is also perfect for cheese making. Since recently reintroducing cheese making after a 40 year break they now have handmade soft, spreadable cheeses and hard, sweet farmhouse cheeses- Black Douglas, Cally Crowdie and Carrick. Finlay's Farmhouse Cheese is available at their visitor centre, online and from local shops. This is a very fine organic farm that has been in the same family for generations.

CHEESEMAKER - Made with unpasteurized milk from their own flock of Lacaune sheep, and from cows from a nearby farm, Humphrey Errington started making sheep's cheese on his family run farm in the 80's and is justly renowned for the famous ewe's milk Lanark Blue, and White; cow's milk Dunsyre Blue and Maisie's Kebbuck and goats' cheese too. Their small team of staff have been with them many years and I could name restaurants that have proudly served this cheese on their cheeseboards almost since Humphrey began, he has such a loyal following. No onsite farm shop but available in many good farm shops and delis including Clan Carmichael, Valvona & Crolla and Henderson's. Click link to see their mouth-watering website and more stockists.

A perfect place to break the journey on the A9 - or just a great place for a day trip. House of Bruar has developed from an interesting foodie stop with some well chosen ladies and gents' clothing, into a very substantial retail outlet - delicatessan, kitchenware, clothing, home and garden. Recently extended, the restaurant is as good as ever with local butchers' sausages and haggis, gourmet seafood counter and tasy buffet options. All self service. The Food Hall is superb. Remember to take your chill bag to bring home the cheeses and meats! By the way there are also the beautiful Falls of Bruar so you can walk off that chocolate cake afterwards!

This family of cheese makers use their own dairy herds and traditional methods to produce Traditional Isle of Mull, and Hebridean Blue cheeses, along with Cloth Bound Isle of Mull Truckles and naturally flavoured Isle of Mull Flavells. They have, justifiably, won many awards. The flavours are distinctive and tangy - a real favourite, and I particularly like the mature ones. The dairy, close by the islands delightful & principal town of Tobermory, also has a wee farm shop. Tours are available where you can get a taste of all that happens on a busy dairy farm, and, of course the cheese. Their big reputation means the cheeses can be found in a number of excellent specialist cheese counters, so please ask for them!
